“The Well of Happiness” made its debut in Seattle, Washington. The original director Madge Montgomery has revived this psychological thriller for Front Range audiences.

The year is 1996. Advertising exec and single mom, Melanie, spearheads a campaign to market a lightweight handgun for women, but fails to recognize her own teenage son’s dangerous obsession.

“The play doesn’t deliver a message or have a particular agenda, but it does grapple with the question of gun ownership,” says Montgomery. “When this play first premiered audiences were eager to talk about how to balance the need for self-protection with the inherent dangers of firearms. We live in a more polarized time now, and TCL hopes the play will provide a way for today’s audiences to consider this complex issue in a fresh way.”

At its heart, “The Well of Happiness” is a dynamic mystery, beginning with the chilling end point as we see how the story unfolds. It keeps the audience guessing up until the end.

“Never preachy or pedantic; despite the serious subject matter, “The Well of Happiness’ is laced with a quirky humor, much of it aimed squarely at the advertising industry. And because Mel is such a sympathetic character, her fear and need for self-defense so understandable, and the outcome so terrible, the play is sure to engender lively debate on the way home.” -The Seattle Times
